[Official FAQ] Corrections and follow-up questions welcome.

Open WebUI is a ChatGPT-like open-source front end. It commonly talks to Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible server. Install via Docker, point it at your backend, and keep the UI on localhost until you add authentication.

Practical tips:

  • On Docker Desktop, host.docker.internal:11434 often reaches host Ollama; on Linux you may need host networking or the host IP.
  • The UI stores chats and uploads on disk—treat that as sensitive data.
  • Do not publish the port to the open internet without TLS, auth, and rate limits.

Answer quality still depends on the model behind the UI. Share your compose setup (secrets removed) if something is flaky.
