[Official FAQ] Share your experience or follow-up questions below.
Model load failures have a handful of usual suspects. Work through them in order:
- Corrupt or incomplete download: compare the file hash with the one on the model page if available, or simply re-download.
- Software too old: new model architectures need recent builds. Errors mentioning an unknown architecture or tensor usually mean you should update llama.cpp, Ollama or LM Studio.
- Not enough memory: weights plus KV cache exceed available RAM or VRAM. Try a smaller quant, a smaller context, or fewer GPU layers.
- Split files: large GGUFs are sometimes split into parts such as
model-00001-of-00003.gguf. Keep all parts in the same folder and point the tool at the first part. - Wrong format: safetensors weights will not load in a GGUF-only tool. Download a GGUF build or convert it.
- Bad Modelfile (Ollama): when importing, a minimal file looks like
FROM ./your-model.gguf, followed byollama create name -f Modelfile. Make sure the path is correct and a suitable chat template is set. - Disk space or permissions: especially when models are stored on a different drive.
Where to find logs
- Linux with systemd:
journalctl -u ollama - macOS:
~/.ollama/logs/server.log - Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%Ollamaserver.log - llama.cpp: run it in a terminal and read the console output; add verbose flags if needed.
When asking for help, include the tool and version, the exact file name, your OS and hardware, and the full log. That makes it much faster for others to help.
