Laptops win on portability; some Macs shine with unified memory. Desktops win on cooling, PSU headroom, and swappable GPUs.
Heuristics:
- Light coding assistants / small models: a solid laptop can be enough.
- 30B+ class or multi-user services: prefer a desktop with airflow and power margin.
- Laptops thermally throttle—spec sheets ≠ sustained tokens/s.
Thermal logs under hour-long loads are valuable shares.
